Cabin: This is an upgraded version of the tent. It will heal more HP and save the game.
Heal Potion: This is considered a drink for combat purposes. Whoever drinks it will recover about 30 hit points.
House: This is supposed to (but doesn't always) recover all HP and spells. It will save the game no matter what.
Pure Potion: This is also a drink. When drunk, it will remove poison from the body.
Soft Potion: If an ally is turned to stone, this will cure it.
Tent: This will recover some HP and spells and also save the game while away from town.
The follwing items are called Story Items. These items are essential to the plot of the game. They will not be listed in the order that you receive them, as that can vary depending on what you do in the game.
Adamant: Adamant is a very strong metal ore. Take it to the dwarf cave and someone will forge the Xcalber for you.
Airship: The airship is the most economic mode of travel in Final Fantasy. You don't have to worry about monsters when you're soaring the skies. However, you can only land in open plains.
Astos' Crown: This was stolen from Astos and taken to the marsh cave. If you bring this to him, you will be able to fight him and obtain Matoya's crystal. It is on the third floor of the marsh cave.
The Bottle: This is the only story item that requires you to pay for it, and pay you do. In order to progress the story any furhter, you have to fork over 50,000 gold pieces. That kinda sucks, don't it.
Canoe: Another one of those all-important items. When you reach the city of Crescent Lake, visit the Circle of Sages, who just happen to be standing in a circle. One of them will give you the canoe, which enables you to travel along rivers.
The Chime: The chime is the key that is needed to get into the Mirage Tower in the middle of the desert. You can get it in the city of Lefein.
The Cube: The cube is nothing more than a key to permit entry to the Sky Castle from the top of Mirage Tower. You can find this in the waterfall.
Floater: While it might seem useless, it is far from. You obtain the floater on the third floor of the ice cave. Take the floater to the ryukahn desert and see what happens.
The Key: This and the ship are the two most essential items in the game, at lest in my opinion. Without the key, there are tons of doors that you would be unable to open. You get the key once you wake up the Prince of Elfland.
Lute: The princess of Coneria gives this to you. You only use it one time during the entire quest, and that is near the end. You use it in the central room of the third floor of the second Temple of Fiends.
Matoya's Crystal: Astos, the Dark Elf, has stolen Matoya's crystal from her. If you defeat him in combat, you should have no problems obtaining it. He will only fight you after you bring him his stolen crown, which is in the marsh cave.
Matoya's Herb: This is the herb needed to cure the prince of Elfland from his eternal slumber. She will give it to you if you find her crystal and return it to her.
Oxyale: You get oxyale from the Fairy's Spring in Gaia. It will allow you to breath when you enter the submarine. You need to get the bottle, first.
The Rat's Tail: This is probably the only story item that is not required to beat the game. You get the rat's tail in the Castle of Ordeal. When you take it back to Bahamut, he will grant everyone a class change.
Rod: This is a magical artifact crafted by Sarda. Whoever holds this rod will have their strength amplified greatly. You will need it to lift the stone plate behind the vampire. Sarda gives it to you when you see him.
Ruby: The ruby is obtained from defeating the vampire, who is on the third floor of the earth cave. When you bring the titan this ruby, he will let you pass to see Sarda.
The Slab: The slab contains information about learning the language Lefeinish. This is necessary if you are going to get any information out of the city of Lefein. Take this to Dr. Unne in the city of Melmond and he'll teach it to you. You get the slab on the fifth floor of the sea shrine.
Ship: This and the key are the two most essential items in the game, at least in my opinion. Without the ship, you will never be able to cross the ocean. You want to get it as soon as you enter the city of Pravoka, but make sure that you save your game first.
T.N.T: This has been kept in the Treasure Vault of Coneria Castle. You will be able to get it after you have obtained the key. Give it to the dwarves in the dwarf cave to continue the plot beyond where you already can.
